COMPENDIUM GALLERY in NEW YORK.

For the second year, Compendium represented Object Artists at the SOFA(Sculptural Objects Functional Art) Exposition in New York in mid-April. The exposition brings together Galleries from all over the world, although we were the only Southern Hemisphere participants this year and last.
The Exposition, held at the Park Avenue Armory, ran for four action-packed days and nights, with a Gala opening for 2,400 guests. Recognised as an important showcase for leading practitioners in all fields of object art...Glass, Jewellery, Sculpture, Pottery, Textiles...you can check the website to see a small selection of other Galleries' representations...www.sofaexpo.com.

What we loved about New York:

  • The Transport System...for one who is 'directionally challenged', I took only one major wrong turn.
  • The People....always offering assistance while I manipulated my ridiculously heavy suitcase up and down subway stairs.
  • The Gallery Directors...such a positive, co-operative, encouraging group who are almost as excited as me when I sell.
  • The People...who stand to one side of the escalator to allow runners to pass.
  • The Shop Windows...I should have been a window dresser...is it too late to change careers?
  • The People...who help visitors point themselves in the desired direction.
  • Hale and Hearty Soups...I lived on them.
  • The Architecture...so substantial yet practical.
  • The Doorman at Bloomingdales...who handed out plastic umbrella covers so you didn't drip all over their floors and stock.
  • The chain of Cafes called 'Eat Here Now'. Maybe I'll re-name Compendium as 'Buy Here Now'.
  • The Parks and Public Sculpture in them and on the Streets.
As a result of the trip we are pleased to be representing a series of overseas artists starting with LEA DOLINSKY Sculpture starting late July. This will be followed by selected SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GLASS in mid-August.

Other recent additions from New Zealand artists are SCULPTURE by Rudi Buchanan Strewe, PRINTS by Brent Wong and POTTERY by Sophie Lankovsky and Steve Bailey.
